Nobel Nonsense

So, Barack Obama's ascendancy continues. But what has he done to merit the Nobel Peace Prize? I'm baffled by it.

Of course, giving the prize to Al Gore has already devalued it. But what's Obama done? He didn't even have the guts to meet the Dalai Lama.

Peace? Bah. Pusillanimity, I call it.

Agree with you one hundred per cent . The justification put forward by the committe for the award of the Nobel Peace Prize to Obama is rubbish.

Yeah, all very strange. One really wonders what kind of message the Nobel committee is trying to send. Its almost like last week, the Olympic committee snubbed him, so lets make up for it.

Though you know, the prize was devalued way back whenever. Remember Kissinger? This surely counts as an improvement.

Ajith: it appears that the Nobel committee also likes to hand out the Peace prize at critical moments in history when they feel the recipient is at a fulcrum to achieve great things (and not just for past achievements). Still, it's difficult to see what Obama's done or is about to do that the prize will encourage. Most likely it's going to enrage the right-wingers in the US and make it more difficult to obtain any broad support for his work.

Veena: of course, Kissinger. Or Arafat and Rabin and Peres. It used to be said that the best way to get a Peace Prize was to start a war and then end it with the establishment of diplomatic relations.
