I recently came across a review of a seminal work by a French Indologist on the maritime and military conflicts between the Portuguese and the Moplahs of Kerala. The tract came out in 1975, published by Droz, as part of the Islamic and Oriental Studies in Comparative History; the review itself was published in French, in 1977. Over at Sundry Translations and Other Tangentialia, I've put up a very loose translation of the review. People more expert in French may kindly issue corrections.

About Me
I have modestly given myself the name of the greatest of the Eldar: Fëanor, the maker of the Silmarils and the creator of the Tengwar. He was a Master of many things. I am merely a Jack.

I think the book is in print in French. Do let us know what you think of it when you read it.

No English edition?

I think Bouchon's published a related monograph in English:
“Regent of the Sea”: Cannanore's Response to Portuguese Expansion, 1507-1528. By Genevieve Bouchon. French Studies in South Asian Culture and Society series, Volume II. Oxford, Oxford University Press, 1988. Pp. 254. Bibliog. Index. £12.50.
And here's a general overview of the extant literature. PDF alert!
Thanks for the link.
Will check google books for something on these lines.
